National Reconciliation Week morning tea at CMC

Staff at CMC’s head office in Melbourne were treated to a morning tea and an insight into the significance of National Reconciliation Week (NRW) today.

CMC’s National Indigenous Engagement Manager, Leon Egan gave the team an understanding of the importance of NRW to both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and all Australian people.

Leon highlighted to the team that this year marks the 50th year anniversary of the 1967 referendum. The referendum altered the Australian constitution where 90% of Australians voted to give the Commonwealth power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and recognise them in the National Census.

Leon also explained the significance of the 25th anniversary of the landmark Mabo decision of 1992 and how it changed land rights recognition for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders peoples.
